'Our lamps may be different but our light is the same'

When I was younger, I remember thinking:

'Why do we [Bengalis] celebrate Durga Puja when every other (British) Indian {i.e. non-Bengali} I know, celebrates Navratri?

Why do we [Bengalis] celebrate Kali Puja when in school they only teach us about Diwali being the 'important' Hindu festival?

Fast Forward 15+ years and I think I have the answer, albeit from a Sufi poet.

Diwali is the Festival of Lights & is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs & Jains, it also marks an important time in the calendar.

Though appreciated, it's not about the fireworks, the sweets or the new clothes...

I think it's this:

'Our lamps might be different but our light is the same : it comes from Beyond'

The incomprehensible and powerful thread that ties all humanity together.

With that very same light, we are able to remember those who have fallen fighting for a safer world on the same day as communities come together to celebrate the victory of good over evil.

Regardless of faith or religion, colour or location, the light, as long as we choose to acknowledge it, will always come from somewhere beyond.

Be the light.
